Steven W. “Hawk” Thorwart, 73, of 1055 Lemans Road, St. Marys, passed away Sunday, April 5, 2026, at his home.
He was born January 16, 1953, in St. Marys, son of the late Adam and Marie Young Thorwart. Hawk was a lifelong resident of St. Marys, was a member of the first graduating class of St. Marys Area High School, Class of 1970, and was a graduate of Penn State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a retired employee of Mersen, retiring after 46 years of service.
On November 12, 1982, in West Falls, NY, Hawk married Linda Jarosz, who survives. They were blessed to share 43 years of marriage.
He is also survived by his daughter, Emily Novosat (Craig) of Detroit, MI; his son, Jarrod Thorwart (Casey) of Detroit, MI; two sisters: Mary Jane Pontious of St. Marys and Linda Osborne (Jim) of Sharon; and by his sisters-in-law, Jane Thorwart and Bernie Thorwart, both of St. Marys. Also surviving are countless nieces and nephews, including his “cell-mate”, Joseph Thorwart, and his best friend and dog, Rebel.
In addition to his parents, Hawk was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Weichman; and by five brothers: Daniel, Robert, John, and Leander Thorwart and Richard Thorwart in childhood.
Hawk was an avid outdoorsman whose life was rooted in the simple, honest pleasures of nature and hard work. Whether he was hunting, fishing, or carefully tending his garden, he found joy in every season. A skilled woodworker, he took great pride in working with his hands, even building his own home. Hawk was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Wilcox Sportsmen’s Club, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 536 of St. Marys, where he formed lasting friendships. He will be greatly missed.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 315 Church Street, St. Marys, PA 15857 on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at 10:00AM, with Rev. Ignatius Camello, O.S.B. celebrating.
Visitation will be held in the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home, 169 Center Street, St. Marys, PA 15857 on Friday, April 10, 2026, from 5:00 until 7:00PM.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Elk County Humane Society, 1029 East Eschbach Road, St. Marys, PA 15857 or to UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, UPMC Cancer Pavilion, Suite 1B, 5150 Centre Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15232.
