Roy Oscar Nelson, 89, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of 397 Berwind Street, St. Marys, passed away Friday, November 11, 2011 at the Elk Regional Health Center after a brief illness.
He was born March 26, 1922 in Ridgway, son of the late Sven Oscar and Elin “Ellen” Olson Nelson. He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of the Ridgway High School. He worked at Elliot Co. in Ridgway before serving in the US Navy in WWII. He later worked many years for Johnson and Sons Painters before starting his own painting business, “Area Decorators”.
On December 26, 1951, he married Rose M. Steinbach, who survives. He is also survived by a son, Kerry Nelson of Harrisburg; two daughters, Cheryl (Mrs. Alan) Schwentner of St. Marys, Darcy (Mrs. Andrew) Wilson of Tyrone; four granddaughters, Emily, Hope, and Grace Wilson and Dessie Schwentner; a sister, Dorothy Brumberg of Washington; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Penny, in infancy; and two sisters, Florence Nelson and Lois McKnight.
Mr. Nelson was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He loved hunting, refinishing furniture, and painting pictures.
There will be no visitation.
Family and friends are invited to attend Funeral Services to be held at the First United Methodist Church on Tuesday, November, 15, 2011 at 11:30 AM with the Rev. Chris Kindle officiating. Full military rites will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen’s Burial Detail. Burial will follow in the Oakmont Cemetery in Ridgway.
