Peter F. Engelberg, 81, of 282 West Creek Road, St. Marys, passed away unexpectedly Monday, December 8, 2025.
He was born March 3, 1944 in Basien, Germany, son of the late Joseph and Anna Lemke Engelberg. Pete graduated from Central Catholic High School, Class of 1962 and was a longtime employee at Keystone Carbon Company. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army, serving his country from 1962 to 1965.
On February 15, 1969 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Peter married Rita Lecker, who survives. They were blessed to share fifty-six years of marriage.
In addition to his wife, Pete is survived by two daughters: Anne Marie Heary (James) of St. Marys and Wendy Engelberg of California; a son, William Engelberg of Canonsburg; four grandchildren: Sarah, Clara, and Dominic Heary, and Michael Engelberg; a brother, Martin Engelberg (Judy) of Brockway; sisters-in-law: Margaret “Peg” Gorlowski of St. Marys and Earla Lecker of Wilcox; a brother-in-law, David Lecker (Lou Ann) of St. Marys; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Hilda Walker and Gerda Squires and a brother, Siegfried “Sig” Engelberg.
Peter was a dedicated parishioner of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where he sang in the choir for over twenty years. He was a member of the American Legion and CMF. Pete took to bird watching later in life where he found peace and enjoyment with all that nature had to offer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Wednesday, December 17, 2025 at 10:00AM with Rev. Thomas Curry, O.S.B., celebrating. Full military rites will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen’s Burial Detail. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be held privately by the family.
