Paul W. Malone, 68, died early Friday morning, August 30, 2013, at his Hickory Road home in St. Marys. He died of complications from an aggressive form of lymphoma.
He was born on Friday, September 8, 1944 in St. Marys, son of the late William and Pauline (Horning) Malone. He married Mary Geyer on August 21, 1970 at St. Boniface Church in Kersey and they just observed their 43rd wedding anniversary. They are the parents of three children and five grandchildren. His family was present for his final days.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; two sons, Scott of Lantana, Florida, Richard of St. Marys; and a daughter Dawn and her husband Michael Keller of Harrisburg, PA; three grandsons, Joshua Malone of Scranton, PA and Matthew Fitzgerald and Michael Fitzgerald of St. Marys; and two granddaughters, Madison and Andrea Malone of New Castle, PA.
Other survivors include two brothers, Mark (Sue) Malone of Colorado Springs, CO, Shawn (Wanda) Malone of Bent Mountain, VA; two sisters, Linda Anthony of Cambridge, MA, Laura (Larry) Orndorf of Lock Haven, PA; five nieces; eleven nephews; and two sisters-in-law, Ellen (Melvin) Taylor of Johnsonburg and Linda Galmish of Kersey.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Malone and Pauline (Horning Malone) Fledderman; two brothers-in-law, Warren Anthony and Dennis Galmish; and two nephews, Edward Galmish and Jared Taylor.
His grade school years were at Sacred Heart and he graduated from St. Marys Area High School in 1962. When he was fourteen he began working at the Erie Avenue Enterprise Printing House owned by two fraternal great uncles, Leonard and Raymond Jacob. In the sixties, Paul’s parents purchased the Enterprise and in February 1971 they sold the business to Paul and Mary. It was moved to Cherry Alley (behind the post office) and has since been officially called Malone Printing and the Stationery Store.
Paul loved everything about aviation and its history, particularly World War II achievements. He started flying lessons when he was 19, and became a member of the Civil Air Patrol. A skilled licensed pilot, who owned a Cessna Sky Master twin engine plane. Paul was actively involved and supported the St. Marys airport. He was a promoter of local aviation days. He particularly enjoyed attending the annual air show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
Paul was an active member of the Crystal Fire Department for over 45 years and was the current treasurer. He served in a variety of capacities in the department and currently was Captain of the fire Police. He was very involved in their many projects.
He was President of the St. Marys Ambulance Association and was an active director. They took him to Hershey Medical Center on August 12 and brought him home on August 28 and have been a strong support for his family.
Through the years, Paul was involved in many sport activities as a coach and booster. He had been a Knothole Coach for the Crystal Fire Department Teams in the late 60’s and 70’s. He coached recreational soccer teams and was president of the St. Marys Area High School Soccer Boosters and was assistant coach for the girls’ high school soccer team. He was a supporter of the Blue Tide Swim Team and the St. Marys Area High School Swim Team. He especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren in their sport activities and they all looked forward to their “Papa’s presence” at their games in town and out of town.
He was a member of various bowling teams through the years. He belonged to the St. Marys Country Club and now to the Bavarian Hills Country Club. He especially enjoyed golfing and his golfing friends.
Over the years, he enjoyed hunting and going to camp.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Queen of the World Church on Monday, September 2, 2013, at 10:00 AM, with the Rev. Richard Allen, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the St. Boniface Cemetery in Kersey.
Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Sunday, September 1, 2013 from 6:00 till 8:00 PM.
