Miriam L. “Kitty” Meier, 95, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of 735 Center Street, St. Marys, passed away Monday, January 29, 2018, at Elk Haven, after a brief illness.
She was born February 10, 1922, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Leo and Mayme Neist Schaut. She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1940.
On June 21, 1949, in the St. Mary’s Church, Kitty married Richard H. Meier, who preceded her in death on April 24, 2006.
She is survived by three daughters, Mary Ellen Pellegrini and her husband Vincent of Girard, OH, Margaret Herbstritt and her husband Michael of Bellefonte, and Kathleen Lingle and her husband Jerry of Clearfield; six sons, Charles R. Meier and his wife Christine of Treasure Lake, Peter R. Meier and his wife Linda of St. Marys, Richard M. Meier and his wife Janice of Alpharetta, GA, John L. Meier and his wife Brenda of Shippensburg, PA, Michael J. Meier and his wife Mary of State College, and David P. Meier and his wife Shelly of Bridgeville, PA. Also surviving are 29 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Betty Meier of St. Marys; two brothers-in-law, Robert Meier of Winston-Salem, NC and Richard “Bud” Kastner of St. Marys; and by many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, Kitty was preceded in death by a son in infancy, Walter Meier; a grandson, Jeremy Herbstritt; two sisters, Dolores Klatman and Helene Wegemer; and by three brothers, Robert, Mark, and Paul Schaut. She was the last member of her immediate family.
Kitty was a member of the St. Mary’s Church, the Catholic Daughters of America, and the Altar Society. She volunteered in the St. Mary’s Parochial School cafeteria for many years, was a former volunteer at the Elk Haven Nursing Home, and also worked many years at the election polls.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the St. Mary’s Church on Friday, February 2, 2018, at 11:00 AM, with the Rev. Peter Augustine Pierjok, OSB, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Thursday, February 1, 2018, from 5:00 until 8:00 PM.
