Matthew J. Johnson, 56, of 552 Chestnut Street, St. Marys, passed away Monday, June 29, 2015, in Erie.

He was born May 6, 1959 in St. Marys, son of Roy and Mary Jane Rigard Johnson, of St. Marys.  He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of St. Marys Area High School, Class of 1978.  He was a highly skilled carpenter and tradesman, and was a member of the local carpenters union, #947, working for Mekis Construction Company of Fenelton, PA.

On June 24, 1989, in the Sacred Heart Church, he married Rose Anne Belsole, who survives.  He is also survived by three sons, Brandon L. Johnson of Camp Hill, PA, and Daniel R. “Boone” Johnson and Justin M. Johnson, both at home; two sisters, Cindy Simchick and her husband Ken of St. Marys and Lynn Schatz and her husband Rick of St. Marys; two brothers, Lee Johnson of St. Marys and Rusty Johnson and his wife Carole of St. Marys; his father and mother-in-law, Mike and Rose Belsole; and by nieces and nephews.

Matt was a member of the Sacred Heart Church.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a member of the National Rifle Association, the Pennsylvania Trappers Association, and the St. Marys Sportsmen’s Club, where he assisted with their annual Youth Field Day.  He was also a member of the CMF and was a past president of the Bucktail Archers.  Matt loved going to camp and spending time with his family.

There will be no visitation.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated in the Sacred Heart Church on Thursday, July 2, 2015, at 10:00 AM, with the Rev. Eric Vogt, OSB, Pastor, officiating.  Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Memorials, if desired, may be made to the St. Marys Sportsmen’s Club, 1339 Glen Hazel Road, PO Box 958, St. Marys, PA  15857, or to the Elk County Catholic School System, Advancement Office, 600 Maurus Street, St. Marys, PA  15857.
