Mary J. Herbstritt, 95, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of 629 Virginia Road, St. Marys, passed away peacefully Thursday, July 9, 2026.
She was born March 17, 1931, in Byrnedale, daughter of the late Walter J. and Catherine Maday Snelick. She was a lifelong resident of the area and a graduate of Weedville High School, Class of 1949. Mary worked at several manufacturing firms in the area but her true calling was to care for her family and to watch over numerous local children as their babysitter.
On October 25, 1952, in Byrnedale, she married the late Thomas A. Herbstritt, who preceded her in death on October 19, 2011.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Georgia Wehler (Pat) of St. Marys; three sons: Michael Herbstritt (Kristine) of Bellefonte, Brian Herbstritt (Elizabeth “Betsy”) of St. Marys, and Timothy Herbstritt (Becky) of St. Marys; sixteen grandchildren; thirty-three great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mary was preceded in death by two sisters, six brothers, a grandson, Jeremy Michael Herbstritt, granddaughter, Baby Hazel, and three babies in infancy: Baby Gregori, Baby Angel Boy, and Peanut. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She treasured the time spent babysitting children, sharing her love and care with each one. Known as “Blueberry Mary”, she delighted in picking fresh blueberries, preparing meals for family and friends, and making sure no one ever left her house hungry. Music brought her great happiness, especially the song “You Are My Sunshine”, which reflected the warmth and love she shared with those around her. Her gentle presence, caring nature, and the many lives she touched will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in Queen of the World Church on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at 9:00AM with Rev. Jeffery Noble, Pastor, celebrating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.
Memorial donations, if desired, may be made to the Christian Food Bank, 817 S. Michael Road, St. Marys, PA 15857.
