Marian T. Mertz

Marian T. Mertz, 85, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of Elk Towers, passed away Thursday evening, May 23, 2013, at Elk Haven after a lengthy illness.

She came into this world on January 2, 1928 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Norbert Lecker, who passed away in 1985, and Caroline Hassennetter Lecker, who passed away in 1993.  She was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys Parochial Schools.

On November 26, 1949 in the St. Mary’s Church, she married Harold G. “Dutchie” Mertz, who preceded her in death on May 4, 1990.

She is survived by two daughters, Judy Dubler and her husband Darrell of St. Marys, Deborah Ackley of St. Marys; a son, Harold Mertz, Jr. and his wife Sandra of St. Marys; seven grandchildren, Stacy Mertz Kline, Scott Mertz, Amy Dubler Dietz, Craig Dubler, Kelly Dubler Brocious, Michelle Werner Ripple, and Angela Werner; 14 great grandchildren; two sisters, Sr. Mary David Lecker OSB of St. Joseph’s Monastery, Jane Moylan of DuBois; one brother, Frank Lecker and his wife Linda of St. Marys; and one son-in-law, Sam Werner of St. Marys.

Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Susan Mertz, who passed away in June of 1959 and Kathy Werner, who passed away May 13, 2001; a son, Jeffrey Thomas Mertz, who passed away in June of 1960; a grandson, Brian G. Werner, who passed away in January of 1993; two sisters, Martha Lecker, who passed away in infancy and Bernice Kline; and four brothers, Clarence Lecker, Richard Lecker, Earl Lecker, and Lavern Lecker.

Mrs. Mertz was a member of the Sacred Heart Church.  She was a devoted mother and wife and she adored her family.  She was happiest married to Dutchie.  She was an avid card player.

There will be no visitation.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated in the Sacred Heart Church on Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at 10:00 AM, with the Rev. Eric Vogt, OSB, Pastor officiating.  Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Elk Haven Nursing Home, 785 Johnsonburg Road, St. Marys, PA  15857.
