Joseph F. Bologna, 69, of 931 Falcon Road, St. Marys, passed away Monday, August 10, 2015, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
He was born January 9, 1946, in St. Marys, son of the late Joseph J. and Concetta DeSio Bologna. He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Elk County Christian High School, Class of 1963.
On October 7, 1967, in the Sacred Heart Church, he married Jean H. Fox, who survives. He is also survived by two sisters, Mary Ross and Theresa Kear, both of St. Marys; and by nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Dennis J. Bologna.
Joe was a machinist, was previous owner of his own construction company, and was the manager of the St. Marys Airport for 29 years, retiring in 2011. While managing the airport, he secured many grants for project improvements. He was responsible for the automatic weather system and backup, and the self-fueling station that enables Life Flights to have more access to our area. He also secured grants for the new access road, two commercial hangers, the new terminal building, and restaurant. The conference room at the airport is dedicated to Joe for all of his hard work. He was also one of the founders of Elk Flyers and served as the chairman of the PennDot Bureau of Aviation grant program to simplify grant writing.
Joe was a member of the Sacred Heart Church. He enjoyed classic cars, boating, and water skiing.
There will be no visitation.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated in the Sacred Heart Church on Friday, August 14, 2015, at 12:00 PM, with the Rev. Eric Vogt, OSB, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.
