Joan “Joanie” Keenen Le Grys, 79, of 604 Virginia Road, St. Marys, passed away Saturday, September 11, 2021, at Penn Highlands Elk after a brief illness.
She was born July 27, 1942 in Johnsonburg, daughter of the late Eugene J. and Veronica Miller Keenen. She was a lifelong resident of the area and a graduate of Central Catholic High School Class of 1960. She was a former employee of Pure Carbon and Morgan AM&T, where she retired in 1998.
On October 26, 1968, in the Sacred Heart Church, Joanie married the late Herbert J. Le Grys, Jr., who preceded her in death on March 24, 2017. She is survived by her sisters-in-law: Jeanne Le Grys of Ridgway, Lisa Burke (Michael) of Caledonia, and Rose Keenen of Clarion; her brother-in-law, Paul Le Grys (Jackie) of St. Marys; by many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and a great-nephew.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Elizabeth Ann Shafer; and by two brothers: Father Donald Keenen, OSB and Richard Keenen. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Joan was a member of the St. Mary’s Church. She enjoyed each moment of her life. In true Irish fashion, she cherished her time with family and friends at every gathering and loved to laugh. Regardless of the destination, Joanie loved to travel with her late husband, Herb.
There will be no visitation.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Friday, September 17, 2021 at 10:00 AM with the Rev. Peter Augustine Pierjok, OSB, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
