Jay Dennis Mcclain

Jay Dennis McClain, 72, of 229 Grandview Road, St. Marys, passed away Monday, October 14, 2013, at the Elk Regional Health Center after a lengthy illness.

He was born March 7, 1941 in St. Marys, son of the late Jay P. and Carolyn M. Wright McClain.  He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of St. Marys High School, Class of 1957.  He was a retired employee of Intech Metals in Ridgway.

He was married to Katherine Malburg Steele, who survives of Virginia.  He is also survived by three sons, Jay P. McClain and his wife Heather of St. Marys, Scott McClain and his wife Bliss of Canonsburg, PA, and Bradley Steele and his wife Lisa of Florida; a daughter, Kathy Schmitz and her husband Max of Maryland; and five step-children, Chris Rieder and her husband Ken of St. Marys, Melvin Shelander of St. Marys, Tina Bauer and her husband Mike of St. Marys, Debbie Smith and her husband Bob of Ridgway, and Kim Shelander of St. Marys.  Also surviving are 22 grandchildren, Kirkland McClain, Hayley McClain, Carter McClain, Tyler Rieder, Buddy Shelander, Aric Shelander, Casey Dill, Jessie Ritter, Shay Bauer, Stephen Smith, Kayla Smith, Patrick Whitlow, Alley Whitlow, Carrie McClain, Erica Steele, Lindsey Baker, Lynton Baker, Brandon Baker, Erick Baker, Jackie Steele, Stephanie Steele, and Heather Steele; 11 great grandchildren; a sister, Diane Haupright and her husband Douglas of Johnsonburg; a niece, Lisa Lechien; and a nephew, D. J. Haupright.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia.

Mr. McClain was a member of the Queen of the World Church, was a Veteran of the Air Force having served in the Vietnam War, and was a lifetime member of the VVA Chapter 948.  He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW, and the Moose Club.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Queen of the World Church on Friday, October 18, 2013, at 12:30 PM, with the Rev. Eric Vogt, OSB, officiating.  Full military rites will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen’s Burial Detail.  Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Thursday evening, October 17, 2013, from 5:00 till 8:00 PM.
