James L. Wendel

May 8, 1938 — October 26, 2025

James L. “Jim” Wendel, 87, of 112 Grandview Road in St. Marys, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 26, 2025, at Penn Highlands DuBois, following a brief illness.

Born May 8, 1938, in St. Marys, Jim was the son of the late Roman and Bertha Eckert Wendel of St. Marys. On September 8, 1956, at Queen of the World Church, he married the love of his life, Judith Erich Wendel, who survives.  Together, they shared a lifetime of overcoming hardship, laughter, teamwork, and unwavering devotion.

A lifelong resident of the area, Jim lived his faith as a member of Queen of the World Church.  He proudly owned and operated James L. Wendel General Contracting, where his incredible talent for building won the admiration and trust of so many in the community.  Whether he was building homes, repairing what needed attention, or creating something special for the people he loved, Jim was never one to sit still.

Jim approached life with a joy that was impossible to miss.  His quick wit, playful jokes, and signature grin made every gathering brighter.  If there was laughter in the room, it was usually thanks to him.  He had a legendary love for sweets and never turned down a cookie, pie, or treat of any kind.  Above all, Jim cherished the time he spent with his loved ones, especially at Camp Hoochiwawa, where countless memories were made.

In addition to his wife of 69 wonderful years, Jim is survived by one son, Scott (Shari) Wendel of St. Marys; daughter-in-law, Donna Wendel of St. Marys; three grandchildren, Kati (Eric) Beimel of Ridgway, Kristi (Blane) Krott of Kersey, and Brendan (Tammy) Wendel of St. Marys; as well as two great-grandchildren, Harper and Hank.

He is also survived by his five siblings: Richard Wendel, Phyllis Grazioli, Ruthalene Zimmett, Arlene Wehler, and Diane Nissel, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by two sons, Alan and Mark Wendel, and by two sisters, Rita Mae Simbeck and Georgiann Friedl.

Jim’s legacy is one of skill, laughter, kindness, and genuine love for others.  He leaves behind a family who will forever treasure the smiles he sparked, the stories he told, and the strong foundation—built by his own two hands.

There will be no visitation.
