James R. Mullaney, 94, formerly of 148 Maurus Street, St. Marys, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston, SC.
Jim was born on May 12, 1931, in St. Marys, the son of the late Patrick H. and Charlotte Spangler Mullaney. He graduated from St. Marys High School, Class of 1950, and enlisted in the United States Navy, serving as an Airman First Class from 1950-1954. For many years, until his retirement in 1993, Jim was the owner of Mullaney Shoes.
On June 18, 1960, Jim married Julia Alice Kosco, who preceded him in death in 1984. He later remarried Roberta “Bobbie” Burkett, who preceded him in death in 2023. Jim was also preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers: John “Jack” Mullaney, Patricia “Patty” Mullaney, Maurice Mullaney, Margaret “Peggy” Mullaney, Mary Kosco, and Kevin Mullaney.
Jim is survived by his four children: Patrick Mullaney (Amara) of Seattle, WA; Dan Mullaney (Susan) of Annandale, VA; Joseph Mullaney (Tracey) of Charleston, SC; and Kate Gerdes (Christian) of Atlanta, GA; his eight grandchildren: James, Maya, Lucas, Ian, Victoria, Ryan, Luke, and Cailin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jim was a faithful parishioner of Sacred Heart Church, where he served as an usher for many years. He was an avid photographer, and he enjoyed cooking, woodworking, and gardening. He was a life-long Steelers and Penn State football fan.
Jim was always quick to smile and laugh. He put others first and would lend a hand whenever he could. Jim’s greatest love was his family. His favorite past-time was sitting on his deck sharing a Straub beer with his children and his best friend, brother-in-law, John Kosco. During his long life, Jim’s kindness, love, and good nature touched many people, and he lives on in the hearts of his children and grandchildren.
A burial service will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, August 30, 2025, at the St. Marys Catholic Cemetery chapel. Military honors will be provided by the St. Marys Servicemen’s Burial Detail.
