James J. “Jim” Brock, 85, peacefully passed away surrounded by family on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Jim was born May 25, 1940, in Saint Marys, PA, son of the late Edna Josephine Brock nee Fritz. He was a graduate of Central Catholic High School in 1959 after finishing Sacred Heart School.
Jim joined the Army Reserves at 15 years old (lying about his age) and went into active duty during the second Berlin Crisis.
Jim married Shirley Cuneo July 22, 1961, having fallen for her the first day he laid eyes on her at Central. Shirley preceded him in death on July 19, 2018, just a few days before their 57th wedding anniversary. Their marriage taught their children and grandchildren the importance of faithfulness, devotion, and forgiveness.
Jim was an incredibly hard and loyal worker, retiring from Speer Carbon Company in 2000 due to increasing health issues. These health issues culminated in a double lung transplant in 2011 and eventually led to Jim’s move to South Park, PA, to be closer to his family and medical team in 2017.
Jim is survived by three daughters: Kathleen “Katie” Munive (Roberto) of Gainesville, VA; Barbara “BE” Money (Donald) of Poulsbo, WA, and Anne-Marie Crawford (Thomas) of Bethel Park, PA; a son, Stephen Brock (Tshawna) of Fairfax, VA; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, with another expected in the next few weeks; one sister, Ann McDermott; four brothers, John, Stan, Terry, and Jude Brock; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and mother, Jim was preceded in death by a sister, Joan Frati, and a brother, Harry Brock.
An engaging storyteller, Jim was known for his smile, sense of humor, and limitless trove of jokes. He often entertained the siblings of Shirley’s piano students who were awaiting their own times under her tutelage.
He was a lifelong proponent of exercise to maintain the best health he could. He combined walks and camaraderie by greeting and making friends with everyone as he went.
Jim loved games and laughter. His favorite was Yahtzee, and he played every week with his family. Those games were played not only in person with his local family but also, through the miracle of technology, with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren living far away.
Jim was an avid hunter and for many years a Hunter Safety Instructor, who was adamant his students realize the grave responsibility of walking about with a loaded weapon at their sides. His children and grandchildren also remember many happy hours aside bodies of water, patiently waiting for fish to bite.
He may be best known by nieces and nephews for endless motorcycle rides, for smiles, and as the fireworks coordinator during yearly family reunions. Jim exemplified the inestimable value of family relationships, of steadfastly keeping commitments, and of always trying to do the right thing.
