Gertrude A. Smeal

Gertrude A. Smeal, 99, of 484 Spruce St., St. Marys, passed away Saturday (6-24-17) at her residence after a brief illness. She was born December 12, 1917, in St. Marys, daughter of the late George J. and Margaret Schutz Eckert.  She was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys schools.

On June 8, 1937, in St. Marys Church, she married Theodore S. Smeal and he preceded her in death on August 9, 1999.

She is survived by two daughters, Janice King Malacarne (Guido) of DuBois, Judy Olson of St. Marys, two grandsons, Eric Olson (Adria) of Warren, PA, Stephen Olson (Amanda) of Boalsburg, PA, and a great grandson, Henry Tyler Olson-White.

Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by six sisters, Bertha Wendel, Margaret Hoffman, Dolores Rupprecht, Eleanor Anderson, Florence Ferragine, and Marie Schlimm, and by four brothers, Robert Eckert, Norbert Eckert, George Eckert, Jr., and Walter Eckert.

She was the last member of her immediate family. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church and had a great devotion to the Blessed Mother.  Faith and family were most important to her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Sacred Heart Church on Wednesday (6-28-17) at 11:00am, with the Rev. Eric Vogt OSB, pastor as celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Tuesday (6-27-17) from 6:00-8:00pm.
