Francis B. Cheatle, 100, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of Wendel Road, St. Marys, passed away Wednesday, January 30, 2019, at Elk Haven, after a lengthy illness.
He was born November 30, 1918, in St. Marys, son of the late Frank and Catherine Caskey Cheatle. He was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys Parochial Schools.
On February 14, 1952, in the Sacred Heart Church, Francis married Rose M. Celin Royce, who preceded him in death on May 7, 2001.
He is survived by a son, Robert Alan Cheatle of Reynoldsville; and by three sisters, Anna Mary Kopp, Virginia Volovar, and Catherine Olson, all of St. Marys.
In addition to his wife and parents, Francis was preceded in death by a son, David Michael Cheatle in 2004; four sisters, Josephine Sporner, Theresa Kopp, and in infancy, Helen and Henrietta Cheatle; and by seven brothers, Norman, Bernard, Jerome, Alfred, and Harold Cheatle, in childhood, LeRoy Cheatle, and in infancy, Charles Cheatle.
Francis was a devoted member and usher at the Queen of the World Church. He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Force, having served in World War II. Francis was a past member of the St. Marys Area School Board and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a supporter of the Boys and Girls Club and was honored as a member of the Pennsylvania Voter Hall of Fame. Francis also enjoyed music and singing.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Queen of the World Church on Saturday, February 2, 2019, at 12:30 PM, with the Rev. Jeffery Noble, Pastor, officiating. Full military rites will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen’s Burial Detail. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Visitation is at the Queen of the World Church on Saturday from 11:30 AM until the time of Mass.
