Edward B. Hoffman

Edward B. Hoffman, 99, a resident of Cole Manor in Coudersport and formerly of 812 Washington Road, St. Marys, passed away Monday, November 1, 2021, at Cole Manor.

He was born October 5, 1922, in St. Marys, son of the late Michael and Theresia Hassenetter Hoffman.  Ed was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys Schools.  He was retired from Carbon City Products.

Ed was a veteran of the United States Army, where he was assigned to Headquarters Battery, 153rd Field Artillery Battalion, and shipped out to Bristol, England.  Upon crossing the English Channel, he saw action in Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, the Ardennes, and Central Europe.  His awards and decorations include: the Army Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal with five Bronze Stars and the World War II Victory Medal.

On August 7, 1948, in the St. Mary’s Church, Ed married Alice Greenthaner, who preceded him in death on August 2, 2009.

He is survived by his daughter, Alicia Goss (Lester), of Coudersport; his son, Kenneth J. Hoffman (Sherry), of Coudersport; grandchildren: Jeremy L. Hoffman, Jessica Hoffman, Diane Sherwood, Brandon Goss, Erika Goss, Joey Johnson, Kory Rees, Jenna Rees, and Briana Rees; and by his great-grandchildren: James Hoffman, Calla Hoffman, Paige Broadbent, Samantha Osbourne, Kevin Sherwood, and Alice Sherwood.

In addition to his wife and parents, Edward was preceded in death by four sisters: Anna Wendel, Catherine Herbstritt, Rita Lecker, and Clara Geitner; and by three brothers: Andrew “Buck” Hoffman, Raymond Hoffman, and Wilford Hoffman.  He was the last member of his immediate family.

Ed was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church.  He enjoyed bowling and was a professional cinch player.  He was a very loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, family was most important to him.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be held on Thursday, November 4, 2021 at 11:00 AM at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Peter Augustine Pierjok, OSB, Pastor, officiating.  Full military rites will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen’s Burial Detail.  Burial will follow in the St. Mary‘s Catholic Cemetery. 

Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until 10:30 AM at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home.
