Douglas A. Schlabach

Douglas A. Schlabach, 75, of 560 Chestnut Street, St. Marys, passed away Friday, January 15, 2021, at UPMC Hamot Hospital in Erie, due to this serious and deadly coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

He was born October 22, 1945, in Alden, NY, son of the late Albert and Dorothy Heist Schlabach.  Doug was a graduate of Alden High School, Class of 1963, and also pursued additional schooling in Washington DC for the Xerox Company.  He had been a resident of St. Marys since 1980 and worked for 33 years for the Xerox Company and the past 15 years for Accusort.

On October 18, 1974, in St. John’s Church in Alden, NY, Doug married Theresa M. “Teri” Straub, who survives.  He is also survived by his daughter, Beth Horvatin and her partner, Bill Ruprecht of St. Marys; two grandsons: Eric Jesberger, his wife, Amber, and their daughter, Olivia Wright of Freedom, PA and Roman Jesberger, his partner, Erica Sabolcik, along with her daughters, Ronnie and Macy Schull of Johnsonburg; two sisters: Connie Smith and her husband Rich of Alexander, NY and Peggy LeBaron and her husband Don of Corfu, NY;  by two brothers: Thomas Schlabach and his wife Linda of Lubbock, TX and Gary Schlabach and his wife Cindy of Alden, NY; and by two brothers-in-law: Kenneth Straub of DuBois and M. Paul Straub of Tacoma, WA.

In addition to his parents, Doug was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Richard G. Straub formerly of Greenville, SC, and his sister-in-law, Barbara Williams of Muncy, PA.

Doug was known for his loving dedication to his family.  He had a passion for his church community at Shiloh Evangelical Presbyterian Church, of which he was a faithful follower and held many chairs.  He was most passionate about his missions work at the church, which he co-chaired the missions committee.  He was an avid outdoorsman and was a life member of the Millgrove Sportsmen’s Club in New York.  Doug enjoyed bowling, especially in his league where he was a two-time champion.  He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, having served in the Vietnam War.

A Funeral Service will be celebrated in the Shiloh Evangelical Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, January 20, 2021, at 11:00 AM, with the Rev. Scott Wiest, Pastor, officiating.   Full military rites will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen’s Burial Detail.   Burial will follow in the St. Marys Protestant Cemetery.

Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Wednesday morning, from 9:30 until 10:30 AM.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, masks are required and social distancing is to be observed.  Although this virus has taken Doug from the Schlabach family, Teri and her family would like to remind all of us the importance of caring for ourselves and our community members, especially during this pandemic.

To honor Doug’s dedication to charitable work, the family asks that any memorial contributions be made to a favorite charity of one’s choice.
