Dolores M. Walter, 97, of St. Marys, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 10, 2026 at Elk Haven Nursing Home. Dolores lived a life of joy, service and above all, love.
She was born May 1, 1928 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Benedict and Barbara Lecker Friedl. On May 13, 1950, in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Dolores married Francis H. Walter, who survives. Last year they celebrated 75 years of marriage and were blessed to share three quarters of a century in devotion to each other.
In addition to her husband, Dolores is survived by her seven children: Gary Walter (Kristine) of Portland, OR, Richard “Rick” Walter (Nancy) of Elizabethtown, Ann Undercoffer (Mike) of St. Marys, Elaine Bartges (Harry) of Byhalia, MS, Linda Gregory (Tom) of St. Marys, James “Jim” Walter (Lisa) of Monroeville, Daniel “Dude” Walter (Angie) of St. Marys; seventeen grandchildren and twenty-three great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers: Wallace “Bud” Friedl and Eugene “Gene” Friedl.
Dolores was a lifelong resident of the area and a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1946. Prior to her marriage she worked at the Stackpole Carbon Co. She then became a stay at home wife and mother, raising her seven children. She was also a care giver to both of her parents and other family members. After raising her children she worked at the Lyn Clare Flower Shop and Greenhouse and as a teacher’s aide in the St. Marys School District.
As a faithful parishioner of the Sacred Heart Church, she was a dedicated volunteer, serving in the Funeral Outreach Ministry, at the parish bakery and as a Eucharistic Minister. She also volunteered at the Christian Food Bank.
In her spare time Dolores enjoyed crocheting, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, watching the birds at the feeder and tending her flowers. Above everything she dedicated her life to God and her family and was a constant source of unwavering support and love to each of them.
