H. Dean Girts, 90, of 106 Nancy Lane, Kersey, passed away peacefully with his family by his side Tuesday, May 26, 2026 at Nelson’s Golden Years in DuBois.
He was born November 26, 1935, in Kane, son of the late John Franklin and Dolores Williams Girts. Dean was a lifelong resident of the area and a graduate of Johnsonburg High School, Class of 1953. He continued his education at Cal State where he earned his degree in Industrial Arts and later earned his Masters degree from Penn State. Dean had a tremendous impact on the students at St. Marys Area High School, where he taught for thirty-nine years.
On January 9, 1990, in Las Vegas, Dean married the late Donna Elaine Palumbo, who preceded him in death on March 1, 2025.
Dean is survived four children: Scott Girts (JoAnn) of Ridgway, Terry Khoury (John) of Pittsburgh, Tracy Carnovale (Perry “Chip”) of Kersey, and Arthur Kear (Amber) of Hazelton; nine grandchildren: Jessica Santiso (Frankie), Josh Girts (Jenna), Emile Khoury (Nancy), Samantha Schulz (Evan), Kali Carnovale (Dustin Larkin), Kara Nelson (Dylan), Karly McLaughlin (Joey), Maddie Kear, and Gabe Kear; thirteen great-grandchildren; step-grandchildren: Christopher Allegretto and Todd Allegretto (Lori); and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, Dean was preceded in death by his sister, Karen Moore and step-granddaughter, Arlene Allegretto.
He was a devoted craftsman, teacher, and adventurer whose life was marked by curiosity, hard work, and generosity. He had a lifelong love of travel and enjoyed exploring new places and meeting new people. A talented woodworker, he found great satisfaction in creating with his hands and took pride in every project he completed. He dedicated many years to teaching students drafting and general shop skills, sharing not only knowledge, but patience, encouragement, and respect for craftsmanship.
One of his proudest accomplishments was building his own home, a lasting reflection of his skill, determination, and care for his family. He will be remembered for his steady guidance, creative spirit, and the many lives he shaped through his teaching and example.
Visitation will be held in the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home, 169 Center Street, St. Marys, PA 15857 on Saturday, May 30, 2026 from 2:00PM until 3:30PM. Dean’s family will share a few words and stories at 3:30PM.
Memorial donations, if desired, may be made to a favorite charity of one’s choosing.
