Bernard F. Shields, 88, of 1230 East Eschbach Road, St. Marys, passed away Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at the Elk Regional Health Center following a brief illness.
He was born March 26, 1923 in Ford City, PA, son of the late Edward L. and Anna McGinley Shields. He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1940. He was a retired employee of the Stackpole Carbon Corp., retiring in 1984 after 43 years of service.
In August 1946, in the St. Bernard’s Church in Bradford, he married Iona Hanes who preceded him in death on July 17, 1971.
He is survived by two daughters, Jean Shields of St. Marys and Valerie Stumpff (Edward) of St. Marys; two sons, Roger Shields of St. Marys and Thomas A. Shields (Sandy) of Emporium; four grandchildren, Troy Shields, Anastasia Shields, Chad Shields and David Shields; one great grandson, Justin Greenawalt; four step great grandchildren; and two brothers, Thomas J. Shields (Kay) of St. Marys and Richard Shields (Phyllis) of Kane.
Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by five sisters, Mary Lou Krieg, Dorothy Jones, Mercedes Krieg, Irene O’Brien and Margaret “Maggie” Schreiber; and two brothers, James and Archie Shields.
Mr. Shields was a member of the Queen of the World Church, was a Veteran of WWII having served in the Navy, was a member of Campowners, and was a former member of the CMF and the Elks Club.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Queen of the World Church on Friday, January 13, 2012 at Noon with the Rev. Michael Ferrick, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery. Full military rites will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen’s Burial Detail.
Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.
