Anthony “Tony” Scutella

August 28, 2014 — December 25, 1919

Anthony “Tony” Scutella, 94, of 344 Grant Street, St. Marys, passed away Thursday, August 28, 2014, at the Pinecrest Manor after an illness of the past several months.

He was born December 25, 1919 in Calabria, Italy, son of the late Pasquale and Maria Caminiti Scutella.  He attended schools in Italy and Kane, PA, and had been a resident of St. Marys since 1952.  Along with his brother Frank and sister-in-law Rose, Tony was co-owner of Scutella Cleaners and Tailors for 40 years.  He learned the trade in Italy at the tender age of seven and was apprenticed and well-versed in the business by the age of 16.  He retired in 1985.

In 1947, he married Lena Joan Barbera, who preceded him in death on October 30, 1958.  On June 14, 1978 in the Sacred Heart Church, he married Jane Pearsall Fedorko, who survives.

He is also survived by four daughters, Brenda (Jack) Nabi of Atlanta, GA, Antoinette (Jack) Caithness of Dallas, TX, Diane (Ted) Allegretto of Erie, and Patricia (Bob) Haberberger of St. Marys; one son, Gary (Betty Jo) Scutella of Erie; two step-daughters, Hope (Ambrose) Krieg of St. Marys and Faith (Al) Gillis of Pittsburgh; 15 grandchildren, Farah (Rick) Chapes, Lena (Jeff) Malchak, William Byers, Mary (Mark) Hurley, Tony (Linda) Allegretto, Craig Allegretto, Kelly (Mike) Doerfler, Cheri Haberberger, Jess Scutella, Daniel Scutella, Amber Krieg, David Krieg, Christopher Krieg, Sara (Chuck) Hawkins, and Gregg Gillis; 14 great grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Rose Scutella of St. Marys and Rose Scutella of Ridgway.

In addition to his first wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, who died in infancy; a step-son, Mickey Fedorko; five brothers, Dominic, Frank, Philip, Joseph, and Pat Scutella; a daughter-in-law, Anne Scutella; and a son-in-law, Sid Nabi.

Tony was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, where he served as an usher for many years.  He was a veteran of the US Army, serving in WWII, and was a member of the Elks and a life member of the American Legion.  Tony was well known for his love of dancing.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Sacred Heart Church on Tuesday, September 2, 2014, at 10:00 AM, with the Rev. Eric Vogt, OSB, Pastor, officiating.  Full military rites will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen’s Burial Detail.  Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Monday, September 1, 2014, from 5:00 until 8:00 PM.
