Janet L. Pesce, 83, formerly of 237 Madison Street, St. Marys, passed away peacefully Friday, March 8, 2024, at Elk Haven Nursing Home.
She was born April 3, 1940, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Edward and Edna Zwald Leithner.
On May 2, 1959 in Queen of the World Church, she married the late Robert J. Pesce, Sr., who preceded her in death on December 8, 2023. They were blessed to share 64 years of marriage together.
Janet was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1958. She was employed at Andrew Kaul Memorial Hospital as a nurse’s aide in the emergency room.
She survived by one daughter: Barbara Herbstritt (John “Eppie”) of St. Marys; three sons: Robert Pesce, Jr. (Carolyn) of Newberry, SC, Michael Pesce (Pauline) of Doylestown, PA, and Martin Pesce (Wendy) of Quakertown, PA; eleven grandchildren: Meghan Allen, Benjamin Allen, Olivia Fields, Dallin Pesce, David Herbstritt, Jolene Herbstritt, Andrea Paul, Meredith Pesce, Dominic Pesce, Corinne Pesce, and Alayna Pesce; six great-grandchildren; two sisters: Jean Petrilli of St. Marys and Delores “Lolly” Florio of St. Marys; two brothers: Donald Leithner (Mary Lou) of Ridgway and Kenneth Leithner (Sue) of St. Marys; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one sister: Irene “Cookie” Nussbaum.
Janet was an incredibly creative individual, with a multitude of hobbies that reflected her artistic talent. She excelled in various crafts such as crocheting, knitting, embroidery, and woodworking. In addition, Janet dedicated herself to teaching sewing classes in her home for many years. Her passion for creating extended to making beautiful clothes for her children and grandchildren.
Following her retirement from St. Marys Hospital, Janet discovered her favorite craft: quilting. She initiated a quilting group at Queen of the World Church, where each year, the ladies would collectively create a quilt to be raffled off at the annual Queen of the World Festival. Before establishing the New City Quilters group in St. Marys, Janet actively participated in a quilting group in DuBois. The members of this group would convene weekly at the St. Marys Methodist Church, passionately crafting various quilts for the betterment of the community.
Janet’s involvement in the community extended beyond her artistic endeavors. She played a pivotal role in establishing the quilt show at the Bavarian Festival, showcasing the talents of numerous individuals. Her own quilts were nothing short of exquisite, garnering countless awards throughout the state and earning her well-deserved recognition.
In addition to her creative pursuits, Janet found joy in playing cards. She passed on her card-playing skills to her children and grandchildren, introducing them to several different games. However, it was the discovery of Phase 10 that solidified a permanent card game for the family. Whenever her children returned home for a visit, a competitive game of Phase 10 would inevitably ensue, eagerly anticipated by her grandchildren as they eagerly awaited their turn to participate. Janet also formed a monthly Bunco group with her sister and close friends, fostering a sense of camaraderie and friendly competition.
Janet’s love for her family was unwavering and evident in her actions. She cherished the tradition of attending “birthday lunches” with her sisters, relishing in the laughter and shared memories. The annual Leithner Family Christmas party held a special place in her heart, as it provided an opportunity to strengthen bonds with her siblings and extended family. Fueled by her deep appreciation for family connections, Janet developed a keen interest in genealogy. As great-grandchildren entered the picture, she delighted in displaying their latest photos, finding joy in their playful antics, and reveling in her role as “Great Nan.”
Janet’s vibrant personality and unwavering dedication to her passions left an indelible mark on those around her. Her artistic talents, love for card games, and devotion to family made her a cherished member of the community. Whether she was creating stunning quilts, engaging in spirited card games, or basking in the company of her grandchildren, Janet’s infectious happiness was always evident.
Family and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at 10:00 AM with the Rev. Thomas More Sikora, OSB, officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.
Memorial donations, if desired may be made to a favorite charity of one’s choosing.

I recall meeting your mom and dad through Bob, I believe over on Tremont St. Then of course as neighbors across the street. And your mom was often kind to give me a ride home after her shift in the ER. I wish you all well.
