Shirley A. Wendel | 90

November 9, 1934 - March 25, 2025

Shirley A. Wendel, 90, of 135 Edward Road, St. Marys, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2025 with her family by her side.

She was born November 9, 1934, in St. Marys, daughter to the late John “Jack” and Irene Whiteman Glessner.  She was a lifelong resident of the area and a proud graduate of St. Marys Public High School, Class of 1952. Shirley retired from National Fuel Gas after twenty-four years of service to the company and worked at Kanter’s department store and at Stackpole Carbon Company before marrying.

On September 24, 1954, in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Shirley married the late Laverne W. “Jerry” Wendel, who preceded her in death on December 7, 2001.

Shirley is survived by her four daughters: Doreen Steis (Roger) of Valdosta, GA, Marijo Lecker (Joel) of Charlottesville, VA, Amy Mulhearn (Neil) of Chalfont, PA, Rachel Cragg (Kelly) of Corry, PA; two sons: Russ Wendel (Debbie) of Weedville, and Steven Wendel (Mary) of St. Marys; eleven grandchildren: Ahren Steis (Melissa), Katie Lecker (Chas Webster), Breanne Skrzypek (Ethan), Evan Mulhearn (Allie), Abby Mulhearn (Jake Manseau), Jack Mulhearn, Josh Krug (Becca), Kelsey Wendel (Matt Price), John Cragg (Brianna), Matt Cragg (Hannah Easley), and Liam Cragg (Bailey Penrod); three step-grandchildren: Eric Mercer (Toni), Amy Mercer, and Josh Makufka; ten great-grandchildren; and her lifelong dear friend, Fran Kirkland of Hallton, PA.

In addition to her husband and parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her grandson, Ryan Steis.

The two most important things to Shirley were her faith and her loving family.  She was a lifelong member of the St. Marys Methodist Church where she shared her musical talents as the organist there as well as the Hallton Church of Christ.  She was a member of the Eastern Star since the age of eighteen.  She also co-chaired the American Cancer Society Relay for Life for several years.  Her favorite pastimes included her card club, Penn State football games, and spending time at her and Jerry’s camp in Hallton.

Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral service at St. Marys Methodist Church at 2:00PM on Saturday, March 29, 2025.  Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

Memorial donations, if desired, may be made to favorite charity of one’s choosing.
