Michael A. Kamandulis | 75

October 11, 1949 - January 28, 2025

Michael A. Kamandulis, 75, of 101 Browns Road, Kersey, passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 28, 2025 at Penn Highlands DuBois.

He was born October 11, 1949 in Brockton, MA, son of the late Joseph A. and Mathilda Miller Kamandulis. Michael graduated from Technical Memorial High School, Class of 1967. He furthered his education, earning his undergraduate degree from Edinboro University and master’s degree from Millersville University. Mike had a passion for learning and teaching, starting his career as a teacher Middletown High School. He eventually moved to the area to teach at Johnsonburg Area High School, where he was affectionately known as “Mr. K”. Following retirement, Mr. K taught at Penn State DuBois and continued his lifelong passion for learning and teaching.

He was an avid reader and enjoyed writing. He would often contribute to the local press with his letters to the editor and was a published author for his book “A Needed Message”. The book was an allegory about climate change, a topic that was very important to Mike. He enjoyed his travels and rode miles and miles on his recumbent bike.

Mike was loved and had a tremendous impact on many; he will be fondly remembered. He is survived by his wife of twenty-five years, Joan Breeman Broughton; daughter, Jessica Mattero (Kimberly) of Dover, PA; step-children: Amy Matta (Ashok) of Reno, NV, Kate Brem (Ed) of St. Marys, and Daniel Broughton (Lea Ellen) of Pittsburgh; eight grandchildren: William Winslow, Lee Winslow, Aspen Stifter, Liam Brem, Milo Brem, Keegan Brem, Kathryn Matta, and Aidan Matta; a sister, Jean Tafelski of Erie; a sister-in-law, Debbie Kamandulis of Sayre, PA; and by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Kamandulis.

Funeral services will be held privately by the family and there will be no visitation.

Memorial donations, if desired, may be made to a favorite charity of one’s choosing.

  1. Joan and family, we offer our deepest sympathies. Mike was a wonderful man who cared deeply for this planet. His letters to the editor regarding Planet Earth and his involvement in environmental causes will be greatly missed. He was a true gentleman and a scholar.

  5. Mr. K was one of my favorite teachers in high school! He always made our class interesting and that was the class I always looked forward to everyday! We will forever remember the”rhino” that would come out in class. Thank you Mr. K for everything you ever taught me. My sympathy to the family.

  6. Mike, a very dear friend and gentle soul. My colleague from our faculty days at Middletown PA. Our friendship kept us in touch all these years. My condolences to his wife Joan, daughter and extended family.
