Matthew L. Newell, 42, a resident of Elco Glen, passed away following a battle with neurological Lyme disease over several years, Thursday, April 24, 2025 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.
He was born July 16, 1982, in St. Marys, son of Lawrence and Lorelei Geer Newell, who survive. He was a lifelong resident of the area, a graduate of St. Marys Area High School, Class of 2003, and was employed at Jet Metals.
In addition to his loving parents, Matt is survived by a step-daughter, Olivia Wright, and her mother, Jackie Wright. He is also survived by his Godmother, Cindy Lasko, several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Norbert and Cecelia Auman Geer; paternal grandparents, Ronald and Eleanor Samick Newell; an aunt, Cynthia McCullough; and uncles, Jeffrey Newell and Wade Geer.
As a youth, Matthew participated in scouting and karate. He had an adventurous spirit as he went skydiving in the Philadelphia area and also piloted an airplane over St. Marys. He always enjoyed the outdoors never passing up the chance to hike, bike, or go for a run. He, along with his parents, cherished each walk they took together in the woods. Matthew enjoyed travelling especially on his trips out west. Matt was a huge help to his parents, taking his mom on many enjoyable rides at Presque Isle and Dobbins Landing in her wheelchair. He will be greatly missed.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Friday, May 9, 2025 at 12:00PM, with Rev. Ignatius Camello, O.S.B., celebrating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be held in the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home, 169 Center Street, St. Marys, PA 15857, on Friday, May 9, 2025 from 10:00AM until 11:30AM.
