Mary Lou Herzing | 91

July 4, 1933 - November 2, 2024

Mary Lou Herzing, 91, of 715 Clark Road, St. Marys, passed away following a lengthy illness at her residence with her family by her side on Saturday, November 2, 2024.

She was born July 4, 1933 in St. Marys, daughter to the late Joseph and Mary Ella Squires McKnight.  She was a lifelong resident of the area and a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1951.  She was a committed member to her county, serving as Justice of the Peace, and took a great interest in making her community stronger.  Mary Lou worked for Stackpole Carbon Company and served as Vice President alongside of her husband for Indus-Sales, Inc.

She married her late husband, Kenneth M. Herzing on October 11, 1952 in the Sacred Heart Church.  He preceded her in death on June 24, 2013.

Mary Lou is survived by six children: Stephen K. Herzing (Anne) of St. Marys, Amy Grant (James, Jr.) of Chicago, Mark Herzing of Florida, Matthew Herzing (Mary Jo) of St. Marys, Luke Herzing (Colleen) of St. Marys, and Adam Herzing (Nena) of St. Marys; fifteen grandchildren: Portia Herzing Belsole (Jason), Nichole Herzing Simpson (David), Karl Herzing (Olivia), James Grant III, Louise Grant DeAngelis (Michael), Austin Herzing (Michelle), Cole Herzing (Taylor), Sophie Herzing, Ian Herzing, John “Jack” Herzing, Adam Geer, Kyle Herzing, Tyler Herzing (Lexie), Alex Herzing (Alyssa), and Reilly Herzing; thirteen great-grandchildren: Taylor, Kenta, Keegan, Henry, Norah, Brock, Memphis, Jude, Lola, Teegan, Sawyer, Tate, and Navy James; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mary Lou was preceded in death by three siblings: Peggy Bauer, Jack McKnight, and Patty Donavon.  She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Mary Lou was a classy lady with a great sense of humor.  She was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Church and a teacher’s aide for Queen of the World School.  She was an avid reader and loved a good jigsaw puzzle.  In her younger years she enjoyed sewing, creating outfits for all of her children.  When she wasn’t traveling the world with her husband, she could be found by her pool reading a good book or enjoying the company of friends and family.  She cherished her friendships over the years especially the ones that developed at the St. Marys Country Club.  Above everything else, she will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  She rarely missed any of the activities or events for which her grandchildren were involved.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the Sacred Heart Church on Saturday, November 9, 2024 at 11:00AM with Rev. Ignatius Carmelo, O.S.B, celebrating.  Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

A private visitation will be held by the family of Mary Lou.

Memorial donations, if desired, may be made to Sacred Heart Church, 337 Center Street, St. Marys, PA 15857.

  4. Aunt Mary Lou was one of a kind, always gracious, giving and fun-loving. I loved to visit with her whenever we could make it to St. Marys for a girls getaway. Her laughter was contagious and she was always so genuinely interested in what was going on in our lives, with our families, and careers. I cherished looking through old family photos with her and catching up on what the kids, grandkids and great grands were up to. She truly lived a full and fulfilling life and it makes me happy that she was able to spend it in the home that she loved and was surrounded by family at the end. I will miss you Aunt Mary Lou. Give my Mom, Dad and Uncle Jack a hug, have a glass of champagne with Aunt Peg, and rest in peace.
    Love, Peggy
