Gerda Squires, 79, of 215 Wendel Road, St. Marys, passed away Friday, July 30, 2021, after an illness of the past several months.
She was born October 25, 1941, in Germany, daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Lemke Engelberg. Gerda was a graduate of Central Catholic High School and was a retired employee of Osram Sylvania.
On June 16, 1962, in the St. Mary’s Church, Gerda married John T. Squires, who preceded her in death on January 7, 2005.
She is survived by three sons: William T. Squires of Winchester, VA; Timothy J. Squires of St. Marys; and Shawn M. Squires and his wife Michelle of Concord, NC; four grandchildren: Marah Wehler, Madison Holliday, Lauren Squires, and Spencer Squires; her sister, Hilda Walker of St. Marys; two brothers: Peter Engelberg and his wife Rita of St. Marys and Martin Engelberg and his wife Judy of Brockway; and by a sister-in-law, Nancy Engelberg of St. Marys.
In addition to her husband and parents, Gerda was preceded in death by a brother, Siegfried Engelberg.
Gerda was a member of the Queen of the World Church. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren, and she enjoyed gardening and watching the birds at the feeder in her yard.
There will be no visitation.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated in the Queen of the World Church on Wednesday, August 4, 2021 at 10:00 AM, with the Rev. Jeffery Noble, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to a favorite charity.
Gerda, you were so loved by every member of our family. We all have sweet memories of you…from Toni perms to your delicious desserts. You helped us out in many ways and in particular blessed me with allowing me to be Timmy’s godmother. You will be missed by many!
Johnny Squires, the husband of Gerda, was my absolute best childhood friend. I never met Gerda but we did exchange letters after the passing of Johnny. My sincere condolence goes out to all of Gerda’s children and her grandchildren.
To Bill, Timmy, Shawn and families. What a kind wonderful woman Gerda was, she made growing up in the neighborhood a special memory. What a wonderful next door neighbor her and Johnny and all you guys were. May we all remember all of The special memories. I was so shocked to hear of her passing.
To all of Gerda’s family, I would like to send my sympathies to you all. Please know that I sincerely appreciate your loss and extend my heartfelt feelings to all of you.
