Carl R. Whalen, Sr., 86, of 153 Lynch Road, St. Marys, passed away Sunday, October 9, 2022, at Pinecrest Manor, following a brief illness.
He was born May 15, 1936, in Toby, son of the late Clifton E. and Hellen Keller Whalen. Carl was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Kersey High School, Class of 1955. He was a former employee of the Stackpole Carbon Company, Airco Speer, Howes Leather Company, Quality Components, and retired from Allegheny Particle Board in 2001.
On July 26, 1958, in the Sacred Heart Church, Carl married Rose Ann Scolari, who preceded him in death on June 1, 2022. They were together for 66 years, sharing 64 years as husband and wife.
Carl is survived by two daughters: Anjanette Catalone (Patrick) of St. Marys and Allison Silfies (Jesse) of York Haven, PA; three sons: Carl R. Whalen, Jr. (Glenda) of Treasure Lake, Gregory Whalen of Cape Coral, FL, and Jay Whalen (Nicole) of Hermitage, PA; nine grandchildren: Jason Whalen, Nicole Grunthaner, Heather McGillicuddy, Brandon Campbell, Cameron Whalen, Cullen Catalone, Dominic Catalone, Isiah Silfies, and Jacob Silfies; five great-grandchildren; and by many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife and parents, Carl was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Jane Pifer and one brother, Francis Whalen. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Carl would attend Mass with Rosie at Sacred Heart Church where the two volunteered their time at bake sales and other events within the parish. He was a veteran of the United States National Guard and took great pride in being an ombudsman at local nursing homes. Carl would shoot trap in his younger years, was an avid hunter and fisherman, and was a member of many bowling leagues. He enjoyed spending his time going to the PFL and CMF clubs with Rosie to play Bingo and going fishing with his grandsons.
There will be no visitation.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated in the Sacred Heart Church on Friday, October 14, 2022, at 10:00 AM, with the Rev. Jeffery Noble officiating. Full military rites will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen’s Burial Detail. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
