Barbara E. Haskell | 80

May 29, 1943 - July 22, 2023

Barbara E. Haskell, 80, of 622 Vermont Road, St. Marys, peacefully passed away Saturday, July 22, 2023, at Pinecrest Manor, following a lengthy illness, with her husband and children by her side.

She was born May 29, 1943, in Brookville, daughter of the late Mont and Laura Dykes Stahlman.  Barb was born and raised in Brookville, where she graduated Brookville High School, Class of 1961.  She continued her education and earned her Bachelor Degree in Special Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1965.  She would later earn her Master’s Degree in Special Education from Gannon University.  Barb was dedicated to her profession, teaching at a few institutions before she and her husband moved to their lifelong home in St. Marys in 1969.

Barbara met her husband, Dr. Charles R. Haskell, in the seventh grade. They were married in the Brookville Methodist Church on July 1, 1967 and were blessed to share 56 years of marriage and a friendship that spanned their entire lives.

In addition to her loving husband, Barbara is survived by her daughter, Laura Johnston and her husband Cliff of Scottsdale, Arizona; her son, Charles “CR” Haskell of Youngstown, Ohio; and two grandchildren, Hannah and Cliff Johnston.

In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by two sisters, Jayne Dickey and Sue Sietz; and one brother, Ronald Stahlman.  She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Barb was committed to her family, her faith, her profession, and her community.  She was an active participant in every facet of her life.  She was a Cub Scout den mother, a bible school teacher, a deacon elder for the Shiloh Presbyterian Church, an avid reader, and an enthusiastic artist.  She designed and created several projects for the charity ball and murals at the church.  She enjoyed playing cards with her family and friends and was competitive at Bridge and other card games.  She had a sense for style and seemed to always have a smile for anyone in which she came in contact.  There was nothing more important to Barb than her husband and her immediate family.  She will be missed by all.

There will be no visitation.

Funeral services will be held in the Shiloh Presbyterian Church on Saturday, August 12, 2023 at 10:30 AM with the Rev. Scott Wiest officiating.  Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Memorial donations, if desired, may be made to Alzheimer’s Disease Research, 22512 Gateway Center Drive, Clarksburg, MD 20871.

  1. I worked with Barb during her last few years at SMAHS. A sweet and kind women. A wonderful sense of humor and someone that could make me laugh everyday. She cared about her students and in her own unique way helped a lot of them get through adolescence. She was special.
