Joseph E. Gahr

Joseph E. Gahr, 89, of 133 Skyline Drive, Kersey, passed away Thursday, August 2, 2018, at Penn Highlands Elk, after a brief illness.

He was born July 17, 1929, in Kersey, son of the late Edwin G. Gahr, Sr. and Agnes Heigel Gahr. He was a lifelong resident of the area and attended Kersey schools.  Joseph was a retired employee of the Keystone Carbon Company.

On May 15, 1954, in Coalport, PA, Joseph married Mary V. Holjencin, who survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Catherine Wehler and her husband Gale of St. Marys; a son, Steve E. Gahr and his wife Robin of Kersey; five grandchildren, Carrie Sennett, Julie Curry, Stephenie Benedict, Keith Gahr, and Melinda Stanisch; five great grandchildren, Maeve Sennett, Camille Sennett, Nathan Benedict, Chloe Benedict, and Rhett Gahr; and by a sister, Jean Vollmer and her husband Dennis of St. Marys.  Also surviving are three sisters-in-law, Patty Gahr of St. Marys, Joan Armanini of Ridgway, and Rita Gahr of St. Marys.

In addition to his parents, Joseph was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Sidelinger; and by three brothers, Bill Gahr, Jerry Gahr, and Edwin “Junie” Gahr, Jr.

Joseph was a member of the St. Boniface Church and was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Korean War. He was a member of the Kersey Eagles, the Fox Township Volunteer Fire Department, a life member of the Dagus Mines American Legion, and was a former member of the Fox Township Servicemen’s Burial Detail.  Joseph enjoyed gardening, fishing, and cooking on the grill, and he especially enjoyed spoiling his grandchildren and spending time with his family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the St. Boniface Church on Saturday, August 4, 2018, at 11:00 AM, with the Rev. Ross Miceli, Pastor, officiating. Full military rites will be accorded by the Fox Township Servicemen’s Burial Detail.  Burial will be in the St. Boniface Cemetery.

Visitation is at the St. Boniface Church Gathering Space on Saturday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of Mass.

Please accept my condolences on the passing of my friend, Joe Gahr. His kind and understanding ways will be missed, not only by his family, but also by his many friends. I will be out of town and unable to attend Joe’s funeral, but my thoughts on Saturday, 08/04/2018 at 10 AM will be of Joe and his family.
