Evelyn M. Newell

Evelyn M. Newell, 101, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home, and formerly of Elk Towers and Washington Street, St. Marys, passed away Monday, July 16, 2018, at Elk Haven, after a brief illness.

She was born July 21, 1916, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Henry D. and Lavina J. Kraus Lunger. She was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys Parochial Schools.

On November 25, 1936, in the St. Mary’s Monastery, Evelyn married George L. Newell, who preceded her in death on November 11, 1986.

Evelyn is survived by four daughters, Janice Wonderly of Ridgway, Georgia Torchia and her husband Gildo of Johnsonburg, Wilma Portzer of Warren, PA, and Grace Kriegish and her husband Michael of Clarksville, TN; 14 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; six great, great grandchildren; and by many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by a grandson, Danny Portzer; a sister, Dolores Ott; and by a brother, Regis Lunger. Evelyn was also preceded in death by two sons-in-law, Fred Wonderly and Daniel Portzer. She was the last member of her immediate family.

Evelyn was a member of the Sacred Heart Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and was a devout Catholic.  Evelyn prayed the Rosary every day and was very devoted to the Blessed Mother.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Sacred Heart Church on Saturday, July 21, 2018, at 11:00 AM, with the Rev. Michael Gabler, OSB, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Friday, July 20, 2018, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.

Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Sacred Heart Church, 337 Center Street, St. Marys, PA 15857; the Elk Haven Nursing Home, 785 Johnsonburg Road, St. Marys, PA  15857; or to a favorite charity.

Sorry to see that your mother passed. Hope everything else is going well for you.
Had a visit with Dan Palmer a few months ago. Getting to the point where there is not many of my era left.
