Thomas A. Herbstritt

Thomas A. Herbstritt, 81, of 106 Catalina Road, St. Marys, passed away Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at his home following an illness of the past seven months.

He was born March 12, 1930 in St. Marys, son of the late Floyd and Catherine Cheatle Herbstritt.  He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1948.  He attended electronics school in Johnstown and operated a radio and television repair service.  He was a retired employee of the Stackpole Carbon Corp.

On October 25, 1952 in Byrnedale, he married Mary J. Snelick, who survives.  He is also survived by one daughter, Georgia (Mrs. Pat) Wehler of St. Marys, three sons, Michael Herbstritt and his wife Margaret “Peggy” of Bellefonte, Brian Herbstritt and his wife Elizabeth “Betsy” of St. Marys, Timothy Herbstritt and his wife Becky of St. Marys; 15 grandchildren, Jennifer Herbstritt and her husband Brad Updegrove, Joseph Herbstritt, Stephanie Herbstritt, Tanya (Mrs. Mike) Gregori, Nicole (Mrs. J.D.) Brakefield, Kristin (Mrs. Jason) Pichler, Travis Wehler and his wife Michelle, Amber (Mrs. Josh) Meyer, Sara Herbstritt, Lacey Herbstritt, Andrew Herbstritt, Kyle Herbstritt, Jeffrey Herbstritt, Zack Herbstritt, Nicholas Herbstritt; 15 great grandchildren; two sisters, Marguerite “Midge” Fritz Lenze of St. Marys, Sr. Helen Herbstritt OSB of St. Marys; and two brothers, Roger Herbstritt and his wife Ann of Virginia and Maurice Herbstritt and his wife Eleanor of St. Marys.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeremy Herbstritt; two great grandchildren, Angel Boy and Baby Boy Gregori; three sisters, Rita and Catherine Herbstritt, who died in childhood, and Ann Kennedy; and two brothers, Mark Herbstritt and Jim “Bud” Herbstritt.

Mr. Herbstritt was a member of the Queen of the World Church, was a Veteran of the US Marines, and was a member of the American Legion and the St. Marys Sportsmen’s Club.  He enjoyed his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and singing and writing music.  He coached baseball for many years.  He was a hunter, fisherman, and loved the outdoors and working in his garden.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Queen of the World Church on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 10:00 AM with the Rev. Daniel Woelfel OSB officiating.  Full military rites will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen’s Burial Detail.  Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.
