Lavern G. Kreckel Jr.

Lavern G. Kreckel Jr., 72, of 1044 Windfall Road, St. Marys, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, August 13, 2017. He was a resident of “Windfall” his entire life.

He was born on Monday, May 14, 1945, in St. Marys, son of the late Lavern L. and Mary Ann Parana Kreckel Sr. On July 31, 1971, in the Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg, he married Mary Alice Rippy, and they recently celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary.

Vern retired from Powder Metal Products (MPP) in 2008 after 45 years of service. In 1970, he helped to establish one of the very first Powder Metal Secondary Machining operations in the area.  In 1997, along with his son, he co-founded Kreckel Enterprises Inc. in the Elk Haven Industrial Park and worked there until retiring just a few weeks ago.  He was a highly respected machinist and tool and die maker.  He loved to teach people the trade and was very happy to share his vast knowledge with anyone.  He had a quick ability to solve complex problems, and could fix, build, or repair anything.  He loved to work and took great pride in everything that passed through his hands.  He was a self -taught electrician and CNC programmer.

He was a Car Guy. He loved Cars and everything with wheels.  He still owned the very first car he bought new which was his beloved 1964 Mercury Comet Cyclone which he loved to show and talk about.  The car garnered him several awards at Car Shows.  He loved hunting, fishing, trapping, and everything outdoors.  He loved his home, working in the yard, and riding his Side-By-Side ATV.

Vern enjoyed his family and his grandchildren, Sarah, Matthew, and Lauren. His Catholic faith was very important to him.  He was a member of St. Mary’s Church where he served as an Usher at 8:30 AM Mass.  From 1988 to 1993 he served on the Parish Council and the Building and Maintenance, Liturgy, and Finance Committees.  He also was involved with the renovations of St. Mary’s Church in the late 80’s and early 90’s.  He loved St. Marys and meeting and talking to everyone that crossed his path.  He was honorably discharged from the US Army Reserves in 1968.

He was a 1963 Graduate of Elk County Christian High School. Vern loved basketball and loved the Elk County Catholic teams.  He always listened to the games on the radio or attended the games in the winter.  He loved to talk basketball with his uncles and cousins, which always resulted in lively conversations at family gatherings.

He is survived by his wife Mary; his son and business partner, Lavern Kreckel III; a daughter, Ann, Mrs. Scott Reedy; and grandchildren, Sarah Reedy, Matthew Reedy, and Lauren Reedy.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lavern on December 24, 1965; his mother, Mary on December 3, 2013; a brother, Edward Kreckel in 1955; and by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the St. Mary’s Church on Thursday, August 17, 2017, at 10:00 AM, with Benedictine Fathers Peter Augustine Pierjok, OSB and Eric Vogt, OSB, officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 from 4:00 until 8:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials, if desired, may be made to the St. Marys Rotary Club, PO Box 923, St. Marys, PA 15857; the Community Nurses, Inc., 757 Johnsonburg Road, Suite 200, St. Marys, PA 15857; or to the Elk County Catholic School System, Advancement Office, 600 Maurus Street, St. Marys, PA  15857.

It is with great sadness that we extend to the Kreckel family our Deepest Sympathy. Vern was not only a co worker at PMP but a loyal and trusted friend. We worked together side by side at MPP and our friendship grew. I will truly miss our weekly telephone calls and occasional visits to the shop. He was a true friend. Rest in peace good Buddy. Know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Mary, Ann, Vern and Kreckel Family,
Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers as you go through this time of great sadness. We will always remember the great memories we made at the Soap Box Derby and other scouting events. Little Vern always had the fastest car with a little help from Dad.
What a good man he was. Rest in peace Vern . You will be greatly missed.

Our heartful condolences go out to your family during this difficult time. This is so sad. Vern was a great man and very caring. I will truly miss seeing him everyday at work and miss all of our conversations we had throughout the day. At the end of the day I will miss hearing him say “get some news”. He always treated my family and I with the up most respect and always thanked me for coming to work everyday. Not too many bosses treat their employees the way he did. He treated me like a family member! We are so blessed to have known him for many years. Your family will have lots of GREAT MEMORIES. YOU WERE HIS WORLD!! Please know you will be in our prayers and let us know if you need anything. God bless!

Dear Family, we have no words, so very sorry to hear about Vern. “Tex” back in the day. He will always have a spot in our hearts, Washington road kids that we were. Great car guy and all round great friend. Mary, we are certain your soul mate is in Heaven and in charge of all the angel chariots. I am certain he is adjusting a carburetor for his parents or mine to make it ride smoother. Sweet man, great Husband, Dad, Grandpa and friend. We miss him already.
