Ivan C. “Tarzan” Breindel

ivan-breindelIvan C. “Tarzan” Breindel, 86, of 470 South Michael Street, St. Marys, passed away Thursday, September 8, 2016, at UPMC Hamot in Erie, after a brief illness.

He was born May 13, 1930, in St. Marys, son of the late John and Loretta Fritz Breindel. He was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys Parochial Schools.  He was a retired employee of Thermal Metrics.

On December 26, 1953, in Annapolis, MD, he married Peggy Joyce Heath, who preceded him in death on June 16, 2016.

Ivan is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth “Betsy” Conway and her husband Jeffry of Cape May, NJ; five sons, Ralph J. Breindel and his wife Charlene of Downingtown, PA, Allen C. Breindel and his wife JoAnn of Warren, Wayne A. Breindel and his wife Mary Jo of Weedville, Donald W. Breindel and his wife Jocelyn of Kersey, and Harold S. Breindel and his wife Amy of Goldsboro, NC; 14 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two sisters, Alice Caruso and Carol Foster, both of St. Marys; and by seven brothers, Henry Breindel and his wife Edna of Wallingford, CT, Walter Breindel of Waterford, PA, Gerald “Jerry” Breindel and his wife Dale of St. Marys, Robert “Butch” Breindel and his wife Margaret of St. Marys, George Breindel and his wife Nancy of The Villages, FL, Raymond Breindel and his wife Sally of Hartville, OH, and Blaine Breindel and his wife Sally of St. Marys.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Grace Wright, Ethel Melillo, and Eileen DePrater.

Ivan was a member of the St. Mary’s Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the St. Marys Sportsmen’s Club. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served as a Lance Corporal (E3) in the United States Marine Corps, and was an avid coin and stamp collector.  He worked for the former Elk County Dairy for 20 years and also worked as a butcher at the former Family Market.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the St. Mary’s Church on Monday, September 12, 2016, at 10:00 AM, with the Rev. Alfred Patterson, OSB, Pastor, officiating. Full military rites will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen’s Burial Detail.  Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Sunday, September 11, 2016, from 5:00 until 8:00 PM.

Memorials, if desired, may be made to the St. Mary’s Church, 325 Church Street, St. Marys, PA 15857.
