Paul J. Schaut

Paul SchautPaul J. Schaut, 87, a resident of Ridgmont Assisted Living, Ridgway, and formerly of Church Street, St. Marys, passed away Wednesday, December 16, 2015, at Pinecrest Manor, after a brief illness.

He was born April 8, 1928, in St. Marys, son of the late Leo and Mayme Neist Schaut. He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1946.  He retired from Keystone Carbon Company in 1997 after 46 years of service, starting as a draftsman and then becoming Process Engineer.  He was a former part owner of Olympic & Boulevard Lanes, serving as Secretary/Treasurer.

On July 31, 1948, in the St. Mary’s Church, he married his high school sweetheart, Marie A. Wolfel, who preceded him in death on June 3, 2014.

Paul is survived by two daughters, June Schaut of Pittsburgh and Pauline Schaut of Richmond, VA; three sons, Dennis Schaut and his wife Ann of Rochester, NY, Daniel “Butch” Schaut and his wife Kim of St. Marys, and Jeffrey Schaut and his wife Susan of St. Marys; 11 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; a sister, Miriam “Kitty” Meier of St. Marys; a sister-in-law, Marge Schaut of St. Marys; and by many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Dolores Klatman and Helene Wegemer; and two brothers, Robert Schaut and Mark Schaut.

Paul was a member of the St. Mary’s Church, where he served as a Commentator, Eucharistic Minister, and Usher. He was a veteran of the US Army, having served in the Korean War.  He was a key member of the Bavarian Hills Golf Course, involved in the construction projects there, and served as Secretary/Treasurer for over 10 years.  He was also a member of the St. Marys Country Club for 50 years, the American Legion, and served as past President of Elk County Catholic High School Mothers and Fathers.

Paul enjoyed playing sports – baseball, softball, bowling, and golf. He was handy with his hands and enjoyed making smoked sausage and jerky.  He built and did most of the work on his home and helped his son Jeff build over 20 log homes.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the St. Mary’s Church on Wednesday, December 23, 2015, at 10:00 AM, with the Rev. Daniel Wolfel, OSB, his brother-in-law, officiating. Full military rites will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen’s Burial Detail.  Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 22, 2015, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Mary’s Church, 325 Church Street, St. Marys, PA 15857; the Elk County Catholic School System, Advancement Office, 600 Maurus Street, St. Marys, PA  15857; or to Ridgmont Assisted Living, 675 Montmorenci Avenue, Ridgway, PA  15853.

Please accept my sincerest condolences. I have many fond memories of your father and time spent in your parents’ home. My hope is the many memories you have of good times together help to fill the void that is left with his passing.
