Richard H. “Dick” Simbeck

Richard H. “Dick” Simbeck, 82, of Saint Marys, died Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at the Elk Regional Health Center after a lengthy illness.

He was born November 28, 1930 in Saint Marys, son of the late Henry and Irene Davis Simbeck. On August 7, 1954 in the Saint Mary’s Church he married Donna Gahr, who survives.

Dick was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1948. In 1958, he graduated from Penn State with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He retired from Keystone Carbon Company Thermistor Division in 1994. He was a member of the Saint Mary’s Church, where he directed the Church’s first Folk Choir; he served in the United States Army during the Korean War; was a member of the Saint Marys American Legion, the Knights of Columbus, the American Ceramics Society, IEEE, and the Musician’s Union. For many years he was a guitarist and vocalist in local groups such as the Foggy Mountain Boys, Stardust Trio, Hal Fritz Trio, Hal Fritz Polka Band and the Keys and Strings. He was an active member of the Cursillo Movement for many years.

In addition to his wife he is survived by two daughters, Margaret “Peggy” (Ben) Hoffman, Elizabeth “Lisa” (Ken) Hoffman both of Saint Marys; one son, Steve (Edie) Simbeck of Salt Lake City, Utah. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Jeffrey Hoffman, Angela Hoffman, Adam Hoffman, Christopher Hoffman, Katie Sobieski, Karen Hoffman, Tricia Hoffman, Anna Hoffman, Kevin Hoffman, Benji Hoffman and Timothy J Hoffman; three great grandchildren, Brayden, Caleb and Jaylin Hoffman; two sisters, Henrietta “Kuni” Roussey and Marie “Wiggie” Rezmerski, both of Johnsonburg; one brother, Leo “Link” Simbeck of Saint Marys; and one sister-in-law, Kathleen Simbeck of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by one grandson, Timothy R Hoffman in infancy; three sisters, Ruth Meyer, Ethel Barnes and Edna Straub, and two brothers, Aaron and Robert Simbeck.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Dick will be celebrated in the Saint Mary’s Church on Friday, April 5, 2013, at 10:00 AM with the Rev. Meinrad Lawson, OSB, Pastor, as celebrant. Full military rites will be accorded by the Saint Marys Servicemen’s Burial Detail. Burial will follow in the Saint Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Thursday, April 4, 2013, from 4:00-7:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Elk County Catholic School System, Advancement Office, 114 Queens Road, St. Marys, PA  15857.

Sorry for your loss. Dick was a wonderful person and friend. I was a member of the St. Mary’s Folk Choir, and enjoyed very much signing with Dick and the rest of the Choir. I can remember when we had a special anniversary mass for my late husband one Sunday. He made it very special for me and my son, Scott. You and your family are in my prayers.
