Richard A. Pontious

Richard A. Pontious, 59, of 223 Benedict Street, St. Marys, passed away Friday, October 20, 2017, at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, after a lengthy illness.

He was born June 14, 1958, in St. Marys, son of the late Floyd A. Pontious and Mary Jane Thorwart Pontious, who survives of St. Marys. He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of St. Marys Area High School, Class of 1976.  Richard was a former employee of Airco Speer and Morgan AM&T.

Richard is survived by three sisters, Tama Bertolasio and her husband Ernest of St. Marys, Dana Pontious of Ridgway, and Jessica Erich and her husband Michael of St. Marys; and by nieces and nephews, Michelle Brooks, Joshua Pfingstler, David Pfingstler, Elizabeth Pfingstler, Lucas Erich, and Abigail Erich; and by great nieces and nephews.

In addition to his father, Richard was preceded in death by his niece, Angie Bertolasio.

Richard was a veteran of the US Marines, serving from 1976 to 1980. He enjoyed sports, especially watching the Pittsburgh Penguins.  Richard also enjoyed hunting, bowling, the outdoors, and his dog, Suzy.

There will be no visitation.

Due to the renovation of the Sacred Heart Church, family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated in the Sacred Heart Parish Center on Saturday, October 28, 2017, at 10:00 AM, with the Rev. Michael Gabler, OSB, Pastor, officiating. Full military rites will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen’s Burial Detail.  Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Elk County Humane Society, 1029 East Eschbach Road, St. Marys, PA 15857, or to the American Heart Association, 823 Filmore Avenue, Erie, PA  16505.

So very sorry Mary Jane & family. So many great memories of “Head Pin”. I always enjoyed his friendship. We had a lot of laughs together & some serious talks too. He was one of the best. I’ll never forget him. God be with you & send you peace & comfort.
