Paulette C. Schreiber

Paulette SchreiberPaulette C. Schreiber, 61, of 265 Old Kersey Road, Kersey, passed away Sunday, November 22, 2015, at her home surrounded by her family after a lengthy illness.

She was born June 11, 1954, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Louis B. Luchini and Hazel Lavella Luchini who survives of Kersey.  She was a lifelong resident of the area and graduated from the Elk County Christian High School, Class of 1972, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Class of 1976, and from Penn State University in 1997 as a Nurse Practitioner.  Since 1976, Paulette had worked at the local hospital and in 2000 she instituted the Women’s Health Care Center at Penn Highlands Elk.

On June 10, 1978, in the St. Boniface Church, she married Robert J. Schreiber, Jr., who survives.  She is also survived by a daughter, Rachel Schreiber and her fiancé Seth Rhed of Kersey; a son, Joseph R. Schreiber of Black Mountain, NC; a sister, Barbara Handwerger and her husband Joseph of St. Marys; and by many nieces and nephews.  She is also survived by the Schreiber family, who considered her their sister.

Paulette’s extraordinary talents led her to have a successful practice in women’s health care.  She was consumed in her work and provided conscientious, compassionate, empathetic care to all of her clients.  Paulette cared about her patients and that was evident in her focus of women’s health issues.  She wanted to see her women long-term.

She also served in the community that she loved.  She would often give talks providing education, advocacy, and outreach support on most any health care issue she was asked to speak about, including the Susan G. Komen, PA Breast Cancer Coalition, American Cancer Society, and Environmental Health Conferences.  On her days off from seeing patients, you could spot her tirelessly attending health fairs.

In addition to the fact that she was beautiful inside and out, she had a wonderful sense of humor and laughed often.  Paulette never backed away from any challenge in her life, a trait that served her well as she faced cancer diagnoses, surgeries, and chemotherapy.  Knowledge, strength, and grace would define Paulette.  She was poised and she was graceful.

Unfortunately, her own cancer took her life.  She learned what terminal illness can teach.  She did not let her cancer get her down.  Paulette did not take her life for granted.  Her life was much richer because of it.

Her death is a loss not just to her loved ones, friends, colleagues, and patients, but for the entire area.  Paulette was loved by her patients and in return she loved them back.

She was a member of the St. Boniface Church, where she served as a lector and an usher.  What Paulette enjoyed most was spending time with her family, especially her children.  Our family would not be the same without her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the St. Boniface Church on Wednesday, November 25, 2015, at 10:00 AM, with the Rev. Ross Miceli, Pastor, officiating.  Burial will follow in the St. Boniface Cemetery.

Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 24, 2015, from 5:00 until 8:00 PM.

Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Penn Highlands Elk, c/o Women’s Health Care, in memory of Paulette Schreiber, 763 Johnsonburg Road, St. Marys, PA  15857.

“My work has become my life.  I eat, breathe, and sleep women’s health.”

I’ve known Paulette more than half of my life. Quite honored to have had her as a friend and confident. Incredible human being – she had a heart of gold. I’ve often heard there are “angels among us” and I’m quite convinced she was one of them, just as I am certain she is one in heaven now & will continue to be with us as long as we hold her in our hearts. To her family, you are all in my hearts and prayers. May God help you find peace during this most difficult time.

My sincere sympathy for the loss of your beautiful, caring, and dedicated wife and mother. Our community mourns her loss as well, as she did so much to advance the cause of women’s health.
I remember her especially as a member of the 6th grade class at St. Boniface, which was my very first classroom assignment as a teacher. I saw such a desire in her to learn everything she could, and I remember staying after school with her teaching her to type, of all things! She was an eager learner who always went above the basic requirements of an assignment to produce her best work. This quality remained throughout her life.

Sis and Tom Gornati November 22, 2015 at 10:09 pm

Sending prayers and condolences to Rob and family. She’ll always be in our hearts and never forgotten in our community. God’s blessings to help yous through this. God bless.

There are no words to explain the sorrow I feel with Paulette’s passing. What I can say is how incredibly graceful she was in all aspects including her fight for life, never giving up. Many prayers and so much sympathy go out to all of her family. Women’s Healthcare will never be the same without Paulette. One thing is for sure, Paulette will live on in the hearts of so many of us. Miss you already my friend.

Barbara Pope November 22, 2015 at 11:07 pm

I am so sad to learn of your loss. I am living in Colorado now, but was living and working in Ridgway when I met Paulette. Was at the Med-Express there. Worked with Paulette and then decided I wanted her for my personal caregiver. She was the most wonderful woman, in all ways. Made everyone feel special and loved. I pray for her and her family. She has left many wonderful memories for all of us. She was a major credit to her profession and to Elk County Reg. Medical Center.

Sadly, Barbara Pope

Then we would both get teary! This community has truly lost a jewel of a human being. I echo the sentiments of what others also have posted about her. I will miss her dearly. She had such strength & courage. Heaven received a beautiful angel. Rest in God’s perfect peace, sweet lady!

My deepest sympathy, thoughts and prayers go out to all who loved Paulette. She served as an advisor to the Northern Appalachia Cancer Network at Penn State College of Medicine for the past 10 years.

She was a model health care provider always making time to both respectfully educate and treat her patients so they could make the best health care decisions possible. I was always impressed that she made time after her busy clinical schedule to do community outreach to help others understand the importance of early detection of cancer and other chronic diseases. She was a wonderful research partner adding data collection to her already busy schedule. Paulette was truly an inspiration to all who knew her.

I feel blessed to have known her.

Ginny Schneider November 24, 2015 at 6:16 pm

May all of you feel the hugs from us, that loved her.

Patty Bonghi November 24, 2015 at 7:49 pm

I just heard of the passing of Paulette Schreiber. Paulette was my cousin and before they built their home, she and Rob were also next door neighbors. Paulette gave me allergy shots when we lived in Kersey and my daughter babysat for Joey. When they built their new home, she graciously invited me to use their Jacuzzi and when they added a pool, she said my kids could come out anytime to swim (and they did). We conferred on genealogy and how one of our surnames had been changed at Ellis Island. I was no longer living in the area when she started The Woman’s Health Care Clinic, but I heard wonderful things about it. The last time I saw Paulette she was getting ready to start classes and training at Penn State for NP.
Today I am remembering so many things about her…she will be greatly missed, not only by family and friends, but I am sure in the community!
My deepest condolences Rob, Joe and Rachel…..

Staff and advisors of Northern Appalachia Cancer Network November 25, 2015 at 10:00 am

Bill Booth November 29, 2015 at 8:32 pm

To the family of Paulette Schrieber,

I want to let you know how wonderful Paulette treated me and what a special person I believe she was. My name is Bill Booth and I was a pharmaceutical sales rep who called on Paulette as a customer for a number of years. It’s been almost a decade now since I last saw her but I can’t tell you how sad I was to see her passing.
I met her as a young sales rep with little experience and lots of ambition. She was kind enough to meet with me on many occasions and it was evident she truly loved what she did. Her passion was transparent and contagious. In my field as a sales person we are not often treated well, and that’s putting it kindly. Paulette always treated me with respect and warmth. It challenged me to do my job well, and make sure that every time I spoke with her I brought her or her patients something of value.
I am so grateful for who she was, how she treated me and the passion she approached her craft with. Please accept my deepest sympathies. The world is a little less wonderful without her.
God Bless. Warm Regards,
Bill Booth

Rachel, I can’t even imagine what you are going through and I do hope that you know that you are in my thoughts and I am sending you hugs. We were unable to attend the services and I was upset about it, but I am sure that there were MANY that were there as she was so loved by so many. I know that there are no words that will help at this time, but please know that both Jim and I are thinking of you all at this time! Sincerely, Gina and Jim Geer

Jane Huff December 7, 2015 at 9:11 pm

To Rob & Hazel, Barb & to all of Paulette’s family- I was very sad to learn of Paulette passing away. Even though we all knew it was inevitable with her cancer- it was still hard when she left us. What a fighter she was and strong physically & emotionally. I remember years ago when she literally ran all over town- she was an inspiration to all of us. And also continuing her practice, her volunteer work at St. Boniface and all the other wonderful things she did in spite of her illness. There must have been many days when she did not feel well at all but she still continued with life with grace and dignity. I greatly admire her for being able to continue throughout her illness. She was a great example to all of us. I also think that she was stronger physically than most because of her running and being very fit years ago and that she was able to be with us longer than others would with her diagnosis. She did not let it stop her from living her life so fully and so caring of others.
Ed & I offer our greatest sympathies during this very difficult time and we hope that you are comforted knowing that you will all meet her again and she is now with Jesus and watching over all of you..
Love & Prayers, Jane & Ed Huff
