Elizabeth J. “Betty” Friedl

Elizabeth FriedlElizabeth J. “Betty” Friedl, 84, of 312 West Creek Road, St. Marys, passed away Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at the Pinecrest Manor, following an illness of the past several months.

She was born February 27, 1931 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Herman and Caroline Mallison Eckl.  She was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of St. Marys Public High School, Class of 1949.  She was elected Justice of the Peace for Benzinger Twp. in 1954.  In 1970, she took office as District Justice for District 59-3-03, Elk County, serving until her retirement in 1993.

On November 5, 1949, in the Sacred Heart Church, she married Wallace J. “Bud” Friedl, who preceded her in death on May 15, 1993.

She is survived by three sons, Robert L. Friedl of Eldred, Wayne J. Friedl of St. Marys, and Dennis Friedl and his wife Julie of St. Marys; nine grandchildren, Denise E. Friedl, Robert M. Friedl, Kristin Lee Swanson, Joseph W. Friedl, Paige M. Friedl, Valerie Hatton, Jennifer Ingham, and Katie Friedl; nine great grandchildren; a sister, Joan Thorne of St. Marys; a special niece, Cathy McQuone; and by many other nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Ben Friedl; a sister, Eileen Herzing; and a brother, Thomas Eckl.

Mrs. Friedl was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, the St. Anne’s Society, and the Special Court Judges.  She was a volunteer at Elk Regional Health Center and enjoyed traveling.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Sacred Heart Church on Saturday, June 13, 2015, at 11:30 AM, with the Rev. Eric Vogt, OSB, Pastor, officiating.  Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.

Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Community Nurses, Inc., Hospice, 757 Johnsonburg Road, Suite 200, St. Marys, PA  15857.

Please take comfort in knowing that your mother/grandmother was a model of fairness, common sense, compassion, professionalism and dignity for all of us associated with her, whether or not in capacity as a Judge.

I always was and always will be proud to say Betty is my aunt. Betty was the best example of a strong woman I have ever seen. My sympathy to all who loved and appreciated her contributions on earth.

Betty and Bud were my Godparents and took that role very seriously. They kept up with all my life’s milestones and made a loving impact in my life. I was soo very sorry to hear the news of her passing. Our prayers go out to the entire family. She will be missed!
